Ango
The Ango is a period in which we intensify our practice. There are no set rules or obligations. Instead, you are encouraged to make a commitment to what you'd like to work on... and do so at your own pace. An ango is always offered at MSZ during Advent and Lent.

During the Ango, Roshi will present a reading each weekday that he is not travelling to support the deepening of our practice. To listen daily, connect with others during the Ango, and offer your comments and reflections, please click Ango Readings.

Zen silent retreats are open to persons of all religious and non-religious affiliations; they includes zazen (seated meditation in 25 minute periods), kinhin (walking meditation), chanting, dharma talks and daisan (one on one interviews with the teachers)and beginners instruction.

"Robert Kennedy is one of the most eloquent exponents of a Catholic Christianity rooted deep in his own lived experience of faith. His wonderfully poetic style speaks of Zen as a way to overcome the human tendency to theorize, by total immersion in a stillness where an intuition of God's immanence can be realized..." (Michael Barnes)

It is "the duty of Christians now to draw from (the) rich heritage of (the East) the elements compatible with their faith in order to enrich Christian thought. "The Church of the future" will judge herself enriched by all that comes from today's engagement with Eastern cultures and will find in this inheritance fresh cues for fruitful dialogue with the cultures which will emerge as humanity moves into the future." (John Paul II, on Faith and Reason).

SIlent retreats offer an opportunity to develop a deeper contemplative prayer life, strengthened by the presence of others. Zazen or sitting meditation is the practice of stilling the mind through attentiveness to the breath. Together with stillness of the body, this frees the mind from its ordinary activities of thinking, and speculating.

From Jesuit Father General Nicolas, ..I am fascinated by the fact that every culture has its own wisdom.....we need to bring in the wisdom of other traditions..in a community where you have Christians and Muslims and Buddhists...(and Jews) you have a very wise community.
